How To Future Proof Your Wardrobe [And It Is Not What You Think]

May 17, 2021

I am writing this on Earth day, and as I look up from my key board, and stare at her from my window, I can tell you she is looking her brightest and best. And like my clients, when she is looking her best and most beautiful, it makes me very happy. And we want to keep her looking that way, right!?

My original thought for this email was along the lines of…

The top 5 eco brands to buy.

But to be honest with you, we really have to get our heads around what our priorities are when it comes to ‘eco’ or ‘sustainable’ brands so we can make a decision about where to spend our hard earned money.

🛍 [And if money is the first consideration then 3 Highstreet labels to consider are Nobody’s Child, Albaray and Omnes.]

What is important to you when it comes to building a future friendly wardrobe?

… that the brand is transparent about it’s supply chain

… that they produce locally and in small batches and support artisans

… that they respect their workers and pay them living wages

… that they use eco friendly, renewable, cruelty free or deadstock materials

… that they use low impact chemical dyes or natural dyes

… that they create minimal waste

If you are considering any of the above when looking for brands to invest in, you are making a step in the right direction to becoming a more conscious consumer.

🌏 But the most important thing we can all do TODAY to help our beautiful earth is to wear what we already own. Because every time you buy something new you are making an impact.

I am absolutely not saying that buying is bad, because it is inevitable. So once you have found brands that you want to invest in based on the criteria above, here’s is what to consider next…

🤔 You should only buy something when…

1. Things are worn out and need replacing

2. You can style it in at least 3 ways with items you already own

3. If fits your lifestyle (and not your imagined lifestyle)

4. You have to have it and are crazy in love with it and it shows the world the unique you

5. It’s a quality item that you know will last and stand the test of time (ie not a high trend item that will bore you by the second wear. Use rentals for that)

✍️ What to do next…

The most important thing to do is to start getting playful and outfitting what you already own. I challenge you to make 5 new outfits WITH SHOES and photograph them. Send them to me too, I am keeping you accountable!
