How To Build A Wardrobe That Doesn’t Go Out Of Fashion

April 25, 2023

When Alessandro Michele left Gucci it was big news {in fashion}.

But in the cut throat world of fashion houses you are only as good as your last commercial success.

And as ‘quiet luxury’ is the byword for style right now, maybe Michele knew something we didn’t.

[This is also an opportunity for me to shamelessly plug the brilliant series on Sky called Kingdom of Dreams, from the makers of the McQueen documentary. A great watch]

But when it comes to our wardrobes, we need to shun the here-today-gone-tomorrow philosophy…

The success of our wardrobes is not measured by how ‘trendy’ or ‘fashionable’ it is but how stylish it is.

As Yves Saint Laurent said…

“Fashion comes and goes but style is eternal”.

A stylish wardrobe doesn’t go out of fashion because it was never really ‘in-fashion’.

A stylish wardrobe contains items that communicate your personal style in a very satisfying way and functions effortlessly for your lifestyle. You don’t want a wardrobe that you need to change every 6 months, you should able to use the pieces you already own and add to them.

Buy things that make you feel like you; unique and interested.

Uninhibited by others expectations… this is style freedom.

Yves Saint Laurent also said this…

“Dressing is a way of life. It brings you joy. It can give you freedom and liberation, help you to find yourself and to move without restraint. Isn’t elegance forgetting what one is wearing?”

But I am not naive to the fact that this is easier for some than it is for others.

Some people have it but for some people, this skill is honed and learnt over time.

✔️ To help with this… you can can do these 3 things

➡️ 1. Choose three words you want every outfit to convey… whether you are going to the supermarket or going out to dinner.

➡️ 2. Get inspired… use Pinterest to curate style images that make your heart sing and analyse them

➡️ 3. Photograph your outfits every. day. This is the best way to see what your true style is and how your wardrobe functions.

Wear your clothes.
