The [Unlikely] Shoe Hero

July 07, 2023

I’m a nostalgic romanticist… I can relate most of my life experiences back to what I was wearing, how I felt wearing it and how I experienced my life through those feelings.

Which means that when styles come back around that I had an emotional connection to the first time, I am very keen to reinterpret them for now.

Sometime between 1999 and 2001 (I am terrible with dates) a client of mine walked into the store I was working in wearing a shoe.

Actually I don’t even know if you can call it a shoe…

It was a slipper made of mesh with a rubber sole that she acquired on a holiday to Thailand (back in the day before the internet ruined the excitement of holiday shopping)

It was love at first sight.

It transpired that she had bought them in all the colours and I was given a silver pair that I wore til they fell apart.

So to my absolute delight the mesh shoe has been reinterpreted for now by a stable of designers, with the cult label, The Row leading the way.

[If you want to get ahead of the shoe trends, The Row is the brand to watch]

But this is more than a trend shoe.

Its glory lies in its wearability.

  • Firstly, it’s flat

  • it’s resonance to a ballet flat means they work with everything

  • the mesh adds texture [read: gives your style depth]

  • and unlike an open toe sandal, it disguises a bad pedicure

I’m still deciding which style to buy… maybe you can help me?
