How Successful Are You In The Changing Room?

July 24, 2024

Are you Successful in the Changing Room?

I had a call from a client recently after she had a disastrous experience in the changing room.

She fell in love with a pair of jeans in Loewe and went to try them on.

3 different sizes later she left the store in tears.

This is not the first time she has had this experience and this was the nail in the coffin.

My client;

“I know my style so well and I am a creative person, why is this so hard?”

I arranged to see her shortly after to shop for a selection of trousers that would not only satisfy her creatively but would also flatter her body.

She left the store with 5 pairs + 1 for her Mum.

This may be a familiar story (and unfortunately not all stories like this have a happy ending).

So where was my client going wrong and how can you get great results in the changing room?

And maybe even enjoy it!?

Here’s how…

Step 1. Forget about the lighting.

We walk through 10 different types of lighting on a daily basis. Some is flattering and some isn’t. Unless you are Beyonce, you have no control over this.

Focus on things you can control.

Step 2. Only listen to one voice*

Your own. You are intelligent enough to know if this item is for you or not.

If you have a visceral reaction to something that is not your usual style, go with it. It means you are growing, evolving your style.

Who cares if Stephanie from the office won’t like it. Stephanie has a different style to you…. and that is a VERY good thing. If it FEELS good, it’s right for you. What LOOKS good is subjective.

Step 3. No shoes, no outfit

If you are not trying on shoes with the looks, you are wasting your time.

Shoes make the vibe (casual/work/play), create balance (can make your hips disappear or make your legs look longer) and they allow you to leave the house.

If you don’t have the right shoe, you have an item you will never wear.

Step 4. You need a top to go with that…

Outfits not items. Even if you are going to shop for a skirt you need to try on tops with it.

Does it work with fitted tops and loose tops, does it work with shorter and longer tops, do the tops need to be tucked in…

Does the skirt give you options in your wardrobe or is it adding to the overwhelm.

Step 5. You need to try more options than you think.

The fit of something doesn’t just come down to cut. We need to consider fabric, colour, texture and details (with trousers; pockets and waistbands).

It’s time for a (Successful in the Changing Room) mindset shift.

  • Treat the changing room like a laboratory and experiment.
  • Remember there is no such thing as mistakes… only experiments.
  • Try at least 5 pairs of trousers.
  • The more your eye sees, they quicker it will adjust, the faster you will get results.

*My clients listen to me because they seek conversations (not opinions) around their style. Creative collaborations that allow them to feel supported but also pushed in their style so they can ultimately grow and achieve. I am an expert at getting to the heart of how my clients want to look and translating that into a look the FEELS like them.

Let your next changing room experience be a great (successful) one.
