How to make quick decisions in the changing room {3 questions to ask yourself}

October 22, 2024

How to make quick decisions in the changing room.

As well as styling my clients, I teach my styling process at UAL’s London College of Fashion to the next generation of Personal Stylists.

A student asked me this brilliant question and I know it will resonate.

“I shopped for a friend and she bought everything I suggested. But her husband didn’t like the clothes so she returned everything. What should I do?“

This is very multi layered but I’m going to focus on one aspect…

Who you should trust when it comes to your style?

The friend had 3 opinions in her head…
– my students
– her husband
– her own

What happens when you have so many opinions in your head when it comes to your style is that you doubt yourself.

You can’t make a decision because you don’t know yourself well enough to know what you really want from your style.

You know something needs to change but you don’t know where to start!

Before you phone a friend to ask their opinion, check in with the most important person… you.

Ask yourself 3 questions…

  1. Do I feel the way I want to feel? (You should have 3 words in your head… intelligent, put together, point of view or whatever is you).
  2. Does it function for my real life i.e. will I wear it
  3. Do I feel stylistically pushed but in a good way

When you are able to reason – to think about why you do what you do – then ultimately you will make the best choices for you.

You are the one wearing the clothes after all! And there is nothing worse than not feeling like yourself.

Because not feeling like yourself only leads to more confusion (and ultimately you wasting £££).

If still need a second opinion, choose someone who thinks the way you do.

I know what you are thinking…

I advise people on style every day, so why would someone trust me?

Because my clients and I think the same way…

  1. We value the importance image and the visceral feeling you get from clothes.
  2. We know ultimately that what we wear effects how we think, feel and behave
  3. We know that we are our best investment.

BUT we don’t think the same things…

We communicate who we are through different pieces of clothing.

And as a stylist my skill is in my ability to decode how my client feels about themselves and how they want to communicate that visually.

Through clothing.

So my clients never look the same.

My clients don’t wear what I wear.

I get them to a place of satisfaction with their wardrobe based on two way conversations, NOT opinions

And definitely not style ‘rules’ 🤮

It’s collaborative.

If this sounds good to you, there are no limits to what we can achieve.
