How to stay dry… with style.
It’s possible to enjoy bad weather. (and stay dry… with style)
If you have the right clothing.
For me and my clients weatherproof clothing must have two things
1. Functionality
2. Style
I don’t want to look like I am going hiking (there is a time and a place for that) but I also don’t want to arrive at my destination looking like a drowned rat.
But shopping for wet weather clothing can be frustrating…
For one thing the language (to stay dry… with style) is not consistent 🧐
🤷♀️ What’s the difference between water repellent and waterproof?
🤷♀️ Does ’technical’ mean what you think it should mean??
So, let’s get straight on the terminology…
Because not all jackets are created equal.
The Waterproofness
💦 Water-resistant
Lighter jackets that offer the lowest level of water protection. If a garment resists water, it is usually because the fabric itself is acting as the barrier between you and a light rain shower. Tightly woven fabrics offer a degree of water resistance because it takes some time for water to seep through the material.
💦 Water Repellent
Water repellency is a step up from water resistance, which means water cannot easily penetrate the material. Instead, water beads on the outside due to the addition of a coating or impregnation like a Barbour waxed jacket for example. But they are not suitable for extended exposure to rain but may keep you dry in a sudden downpour on the way to the tube.
💦 Weatherproof
Weatherproof refers to garments which are extremely weather resistant (wind, snow, rain) but which cannot be referred to as waterproof because of the construction.
💦 Waterproof
The material forms a solid barrier against water and the seams are ’taped’ with waterproof taping to prevent water getting through the stitching. Not all waterproof jackets are breathable… you are either looking for styles with underarm zips or back flaps or investing in a fabrication with breathability built in like using a hydrophilic fabric which moves body moisture away from the skin, in combination with a water-repellent outer layer means it keeps you dry outside and comfortable inside.
Brands understand the need for clothing that not only performs but looks great too. And those that don’t have the technical capability collaborate.
3 of my favourite collabs
1. Arket and Tretorn
2. Lee x Stutterheim
3. Souer x K-Way

P.S. The style of jacket you need really depends on your lifestyle and how you like to wear your clothes. If you struggle to get dressed at this time of year, it’s because you don’t have the right layers.
