Rewriting Your Relationship With Your Wardrobe

May 02, 2026

Rewriting Your Relationship With Your Wardrobe. In the personal styling suite with a client recently, she said something that really resonated…

“Wow… some clothes just love you, don’t they? They make you look and feel amazing.
And then some clothes really hate you.”

It’s true.

We build relationships with our clothes. It makes sense — they become an extension of who we are and how we feel. They represent us: how we think about ourselves on the inside and how we relate to those around us. A language, if you will.

So of course, we only want to spend time with clothes that love us and support us.

Just like friends… we choose, curate, and foster those relationships.

Like friends, our clothes:

  • Make us feel something
  • Boost our confidence
  • Cocoon us when we feel a little derailed

But also, like friendships, some pieces support us for a certain stage of life — and then, for no real reason other than time, we lose that connection.

Rewriting Your Relationship With Your Wardrobe

Think of your wardrobe in four categories:

1. Best friends

The pieces you wear all the time. Effortless. Easy. A natural extension of you.

2. Good friends

Items you wear now and again. They work well with your “best friends,” but require a little more thought.

3. Emotional ties

Pieces you love… but rarely wear. They sit in your wardrobe, and your heart sings when you see them — but they don’t often make it out.

4. The mistakes

Items that let you down. Maybe they were expensive, don’t fit quite right, or you’re “waiting” for the perfect occasion that never comes.

When was the last time you checked in with your clothes?

Like any relationship, they need attention. When you give them your time, you often rediscover something — and it can completely shift your energy.

Carve out time to reconnect with your wardrobe. This is a great time of year to do it.

To reset the balance…

Start with Tier 1 — your “best friends.”

Ask yourself:

  • What three words describe these pieces?
  • Why are they so good?
  • How do they make you feel?
  • Why are they so functional?

It’s completely fine to have items you only wear occasionally — but they shouldn’t be the majority.

Do you need to reset the balance?

Think about:

  • Where are the gaps?
  • How can you do more of what you love?

And remember — don’t just look at items individually. Think about how everything works together. It’s about the relationship between pieces and how they come together in outfits. Like the best party you have ever been too where everyone gets on!

Spend more time with your clothes — you will reap the rewards.

P.S. If reconnecting feels difficult, you might just need a mediator… that’s where we come in.

Or maybe it’s simply a lack of time — life gets busy, and your wardrobe falls to the bottom of the list.

Either way, we can help.
