Six Jackets That Solve London Weather
Is this weather giving anyone else whiplash?
I saw a post on Instagram about the “the 12 seasons” in London and for anyone who lives here (or is British) this will ring very true.
Winter, Fool’s Spring, Second Winter, Third Winter, Actual Spring, The Pollening, Summer, Hell, False Autumn, Second Summer, Actual Autumn…
Several clients of mine who have recently relocated to London find dressing for our weather a real challenge. One messaged me this week saying simply: “Wow… the weather.” Yep.
What I realised this week is how much jackets do the heavy lifting in my wardrobe — both for style and functionality.
It’s a bit of a crème egg situation. You want the outside to be as good as the inside… but they also need to work beautifully together.
Six Jackets That Solve London Weather
Every day this week I wore a different jacket:
- A blazer when I wanted gravitas but still ease
- A bomber to add a sporty, pragmatic element on a day I was prepping and constantly moving
- A light cotton jacket when it suddenly hit 16 degrees outside
Layering can feel intimidating, so I like to think about jackets in terms of vibes. If you can pinpoint how you want to feel, you can choose the right jacket.
I tend to think about my jacket first. Often I’m not taking it off — I’m prepping in stores, pounding the streets, on a mindfulness walk (and inevitably bumping into someone I know), and generally… I’m cold.
If you’re someone who throws your jacket over a chair the moment you arrive at work, your needs are different. You’ll want something neutral and practical that goes with everything.
Whatever your jacket priorities, here’s a pic’n’mix list of winners by vibe…
Because “vibes” makes it much easier for you to choose intuitively.
1. Cotton jacket
Vibe: Throw-on classic. Relaxed, thoughtful, quietly stylish.
The trick is in the styling — they are great with trousers and skirts to elevate. Perfect for everyday London wandering.
2. Techy jacket
Vibe: Practical, modern, leans sporty.
Purposeful and efficient. This is the “I’ve got places to be and weather won’t stop me” jacket.
3. Blazer
Vibe: Polished authority with ease.
Structured but not stiff — it adds gravitas while still feeling relaxed and wearable.
4. Trench
Vibe: Urban sophistication.
The kind of jacket that makes you instantly feel done because the design is so built in but without having to think too much.
5. Leather jacket
Vibe: Effortless, cool, a little rebellious
Confident, luxurious and instantly adds edge to anything.
6. Bomber
Vibe: Sporty, relaxed, contemporary.
Easy, youthful, and pragmatic — great for busy days when comfort matters.
And of course here are my favourites… and I want every one.
Penny.
P.S. Wardrobes with good layering potential work hard for you.
If your wardrobe ever feels like you’re working for it instead of it working for you, that’s usually a sign the balance needs adjusting — and it’s exactly the kind of thing we can fix together.
