The 2 Things You Must Know When Buying Denim

September 13, 2024

There are 2 things you must know when buying Denim.

Even if you don’t have kids returning to school or work in the schooling system, the change of weather brings a feeling of starting a fresh.

And as the weather can be unpredictable this time of year, we inevitably reach for those wearable items that we rely on again and again to get us through.

Case in point, denim.

The key to buying denim, is versatility…

The wardrobe workhorse needs to work with;

  • blazers for work…
  • a knit for lunch at the pub…
  • a statement top for evening…

But before I share with you the 2 styles to have in your wardrobe to work for all the above eventualities, you need to know these 2 things.

1. What shoes are your wearing?

Will they look as good with a pointed toe flat for work as they will with your favourite trainer for the weekend?

2. What coloured tops are you wearing?

Washes of denim are so nuanced. Under changing room lighting you might think you are buying a ‘go with everything’ mid blue but when you get it home you realise the yellow undertone looks weird against your cooler toned tops. Keep your favourite coloured tops in mind.

I love a grey jean which effortlessly works with black cashmere for weekend or a white shirt and a trench for work

NOW you are ready to shop

Here are my TOP TIPS

  1. Wear your most worn top and most worn trainers when you are trying on.
  2. Try at least 5 pairs… but I recommend 10. Only by trying them on one after the other does it become obvious which cut is best for you.
  3. Use the styling assistant! Tell them what you are looking for and get them to select the best selling brands.

What styles should you be looking out for?

  1. Straight leg – timeless silhouette that balances comfortable and style.
  2. Barrel (also known as horse shoe)– the must-have shape that perfectly balances masculine and feminine making them a good choice if you want to wear heels.

I just bought the Witkin from Agolde (pronounced Ay-Goldie) and have worn them 3 days in a row!

Happy denim shopping!

P.S. This time of year is ALL about layering. But I know how hard most people find this. Book your wardrobe review and stop being caught out by the changeable weather. Or simply reach out over here.
