The Changing Room Mistake Everyone Makes – Even My Clients

May 09, 2026

The Changing Room Mistake. The one thing I notice that is almost universal when people try on clothes is this:

They put something on…
Look in the mirror…
And instantly decide whether they like it or not.

We are all in such a rush for immediate results that if something doesn’t look perfect within three seconds, we take it straight back off again.

But getting dressed…really getting dressed with style, doesn’t work like that.

The Changing Room Mistake

The changing room shouldn’t be a yes/no exercise. It should be a place to play.

Because most clothes don’t come alive the second you zip them up. They need styling. Tweaking. Energy. Context.

The magic is often in the adjustment.

Roll the sleeves.
Undo another button.
Tuck it in.

Belt it

Turn the hem up.
Add a necklace.
Push the proportions around a little.

Suddenly the outfit changes completely.

And then there’s the bigger picture…because an item rarely exists on its own. You need to outfit build.

What jacket would go over it?
Does the length work with your trousers?
Would it sit better with a slimmer skirt?
Does it need a belt?
Can you actually imagine yourself wearing it in real life?

One of the biggest mistakes people make is trying things on in isolation. But clothes are relational — they need to work with the rest of your wardrobe, not just survive under harsh changing room lighting for thirty seconds.

And please… always try things on with a shoe.

The shoe changes everything:

  • the proportions
  • the posture
  • the vibe
  • the silhouette

A dress with a flat is a completely different dress with a heel. Trousers without a shoe tell you almost nothing.

Wear the shoe you intend to wear into the changing room. It instantly helps you visualise the outfit properly and make better decisions.

The clients who find the best clothes are rarely the ones who make the fastest decisions. They’re the ones willing to experiment a little.

To play.

To give the clothes a chance.

Because sometimes the outfit isn’t wrong — it’s just unfinished.

P.S. If you find changing rooms overwhelming, frustrating, or you constantly feel like “nothing suits you,” it’s very rarely you…it’s usually the process. You just need another eye to help style, tweak, and show you the potential in pieces you’d otherwise dismiss. That’s exactly what we do in personal styling appointments.
