The Christmas jumper you won’t see everywhere… yet.
For the ultimate Christmas jumper…
The Fair Isle jumper is a winter classic. It seems perpetually in vogue with designers reworking the traditional intricate patterns every winter season.
We can thank the Prince of Wales for popularising it back in 1921. After he visited Fair Isle in the Shetland Islands where the time-honoured knitting technique originates from.
Today the term Fair Isle is used to describe any colourful knitwear and offers a cosy touch of nostalgia at this time of year.
If you were to describe your Christmas jumper, it’s probably Fair Isle.
♦️But Fair Isle has a handsome Scottish cousin that has been getting more attention recently.
At first I was seeing fresh iterations in menswear but the democratisation of things means I’m now seeing this classic diamond pattern in womenswear collections too.
The Argyle was adopted by the golfing world after the Duke of Windsor wore it while playing golf in the 20s, but it’s actually been worn by Scottish highlanders since 17th century.
Fast forward to today and the Argyle feels like a fresh alternative to Fair Isle and just as versatile.
