The {Flattering} Waist Detail I’m Seeing Everywhere
The {Flattering} Waist Detail I’m Seeing Everywhere. I’ve just finished teaching for two weeks at UAL’s London College of Fashion, working with 20 of the most talented and bright students.
Among countless insightful conversations about style, one topic that stood out was trends.
We explored how trends not only filter down from the macro level… they also bubble up from the micro level. The micro trends, particularly those that emerge from the streets, are more nuanced and detail-oriented and often arise from a place of pragmatism.
I love a trend rooted in functionality, which is why the “bubble-up” trends are so fascinating to me. These trends emerge from a basic need for wearability and practicality. We want to satisfy our internal needs and desires through clothing, while also feeling connected to the broader cultural conversation happening around us.
The {Flattering} Waist Detail
Case in point: the drawstring.
I’m noticing this detail appearing on denim, shirting, jackets, trousers, skirts—pretty much everywhere.
The ability to cinch our clothing on a whim allows us to adjust to both our mood (cinch it in for a more feminine, precise look or let it out for a more relaxed vibe) and body fluctuations.
Clothing that can adapt to these changes has longevity in your wardrobe — it’s a sustainable approach, if you will.
