The Hat That Makes the Outfit

May 29, 2026

Lauren Hutton wore a double-breasted suit in a pepper-and-salt tailoring fabric, finished with an anthurium tucked into the pocket, to Louise Trotter’s debut collection for Bottega.

As much as the suit itself set my heart on fire, it was really the combination of the suit, the flower, and the way she topped it all off with a bucket hat that made the look so noteworthy to me.

The Hat That Makes the Outfit

This isn’t the first time Hutton has accessorised with a bucket hat.

She made it part of her signature in the late ’70s and was hugely influential in defining the styling of that era, yet she continues to wear them today with an enviable nonchalance.

I’ve been thinking about her style a lot lately…

…the way the hat feels easeful and pragmatic without leaning ironic or streetwear-influenced. There’s nothing hyped or trend-oriented about it.

Now that we’re in the warmer months, I’m looking for a hat that will seamlessly fit into my style and, dare I say it, even make a look more interesting.

I want it to feel deliberate but unfussy — and ultimately practical. It can’t be too structured, and it needs to feel urban without looking out of place on the beach.

I’m not averse to a cap, and I have a brilliant UPF shell version from Hunza G that I wear to the beach, in the pool, or to the gym.

But otherwise, caps tend to lean too sporty for me, so they’re not quite the all-rounder my style needs.

It’s the Hutton hat I ultimately want — and I’ve done my best to find great options here.

PS: Accessories can do a lot of the heavy lifting when it comes to style, but they need thought. You may already own the accessories that can transform your style—you just need to know how to use them.
