The Jacket Shift {Leather Jackets My Clients Are Buying}
Leather Jackets. For the next few newsletters, I want to focus on transitioning into Spring.
It’s selfish really… because my brain needs it. It needs to feel the optimism of change because the thought of relying on woolly layers for much longer sends me spiralling.
I am craving …
-
polish.
-
gloss.
-
edge and precision.
-
refinement.
-
structure.
Anything that feels like the antithesis of wool jumpers. I’m bored of cosy.
At the moment, I’m collecting Leather Jackets.
Not literally. Metaphorically. Visually.
…Have you seen Sherlock with Benedict Cumberbatch? If you have, imagine my leather jacket collection occupying a prime position in my “mind palace” — catalogued by colour, length and details.
I flick through this virtual rail daily, asking myself: which one would I choose with today’s outfit? The one I keep reaching for in my imagination is the one that eventually gets promoted from my mind… to my wardrobe.
So, what are the considerations?
Length
The two lengths that work no matter your height are waist-length or classic length (where your bum meets your leg — though this will vary depending on your proportions).
Are you more of a dress person or a trouser person? If you favour dresses and you’re petite and/or curvier, a shorter length can often be more flattering.
Colour
What goes with everything in your wardrobe? This jacket should work hard.
Yes, burgundy is trending, but be wary of tones that lean too pink. They’re often too limiting.
Details
Hardware really influences the styling and longevity of a jacket. Personally, I prefer minimal hardware and fewer zips — it allows for much more versatility and doesn’t date as quickly.
And if you’re shopping at lower price points, excessive hardware can sometimes cheapen the look.
How you’ll wear it
I want to be able to layer knitwear underneath — but I also want the fit to work with something finer… so elegantly loose and not too oversized.
Fabric and shape
I prefer supple shapes and softer leather. It feels lighter — and it actually is lighter — which makes it easier to wear. Having said that, I am very into leather coats and edgier styles, when investing it is always about what reflects your style and how you like to wear your clothes.
Moving from coats to jackets is the first real sign of Spring.
Bring it on.
Come into my mind palace… Here are my and my client’s favourites…
